Jacky Niven - Chair and Founder of SABAB

I was a child of the 60’s and grew up in Manchester. In the 80’s I enjoyed success working as a commercial illustrator and undertaking commissions for portrait work.

A career change in 1992 led me to leave Manchester for Scotland where the "big sky" and the often dramatic climate has proven to be my inspiration.

A full-time Artist, I have been producing works influenced by the every changing mood of the climate and landscape. In an exciting change of direction my work has taken me on a different journey creating bolder, abstract pieces.

About the Artist
At age 39 I discovered that I had a condition known as Synaesthesia. Up until then I thought every one heard music in colour..."...isn't that why they turn the lights down at a concert...so you can hear the colours better?"

I have experimented with works to try and demonstrate what I see when I hear certain numbers, musical notes and words or experience heighted emotions. This is no easy task as it often doesn't have form. I now include elements of my synesthesia experiences within my abstract paintings. Through this work I hope to try and learn more about my condition and invite others to see a snap shot of the world as I hear it.
